One of the oldest questions of humanity is about justice: Why do good things happen to bad people? We look around and see those who cheat, lie, and mistreat others prosper, while those who live uprightly struggle. The tension is real—and the Bible does not shy away from addressing it.

  1. Bad Things Happen to Everyone

First, we must recognize that suffering and hardship are not limited to one group of people. Jesus said plainly: “He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous” (Matthew 5:45, NIV).

In other words, life’s blessings and challenges come to everyone. Trouble is not always a measure of God’s displeasure, nor is prosperity always a sign of His approval.

  1. The Problem of Human Sin

Romans 3:23 reminds us: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Before pointing to others as “bad,” Scripture calls us to acknowledge our own need for grace. At our core, none of us stand guiltless before God—yet He gives us good things every day: breath, provision, mercy, and opportunities to repent.

This reality shifts the question. Instead of “Why do good things happen to bad people?” we might humbly ask, “Why does God show mercy to any of us at all?”

  1. God’s Justice is Not Always Immediate

The psalmist wrestled with this same dilemma: “For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked” (Psalm 73:3). But later, after seeking God, he realized: “Then I understood their final destiny” (Psalm 73:17).

God’s justice is certain, but not always instant. While the wicked may prosper temporarily, their success does not last. Divine justice operates on God’s timeline, not ours.

  1. God’s Kindness Leads to Repentance

Romans 2:4 teaches us that God’s kindness is meant to lead people to repentance. Sometimes when we see “good things” happening to people who do wrong, it may not be a reward but an extension of mercy—God giving space for repentance before judgment.

Final Encouragement

Life will not always look fair. But God’s justice is never absent. Our call is not to envy the wicked or despair in suffering but to trust that God’s wisdom is higher than ours. In the end, His justice will prevail, His mercy will be revealed, and His Kingdom will bring every wrong into the light.
